Safety at Otay Landfill

At Otay Landfill, keeping our community and our workers safe is the most important thing we do. Safety is a priority throughout our operations, from the very base of our Landfill’s liner to the trucks we screen as they enter our gates.

How We Protect The Community

  • Overseen Continuously – We use a sophisticated data management software that allows operators to monitor both the gas collection system and leachate storage system right from their smart phones. This ensures that our personnel are informed about our infrastructure operation 24-hours a day.

  • Protects Groundwater and/or Protects Surface Water – Otay Landfill monitors its existing waste footprint with 21 individual groundwater monitoring wells, 5 surface water monitoring points and an engineered leachate collection system. Each of these is tested routinely for a host of chemical and physical parameters to ensure that Otay Landfill keeps the environment clean. We contract with third-party hydrogeologists, engineers, groundwater technicians, stormwater technicians and the latest lab analysis techniques to verify that our groundwater and surface water are safe.

  • Protects the Air – Our on-site landfill gas technicians monitor the surface of the Landfill and exterior gas probes for landfill gas. This verifies that the landfill gas collection system is operating properly and capturing greenhouse gases.

  • Screened for Radiation –Otay Landfill screens every load of waste for potential nuclear radiation with an industrial RadComm Radiation Detection System.

  • Inspected Regularly – Otay Landfill is inspected at minimum once a month by anyone of the following regulatory agencies: City of San Diego Local Enforcement Agency, the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, CalRecycle, and the San Diego Air Pollution Control District.

  • Screened for Electronic Waste — All electronic and hazardous waste is removed from the waste stream so it is not disposed of at the Landfill.
